Abbreviated show

The variety show last night was abbreviated. We were in a force 8 storm and the ship was pitching somewhat. 
The magician was cancelled as his act gets people up on stage but that wasn't going to be safe. Andrew Robley sang a few numbers occasionally lurching across the stage. Eryn performed despite feeling rather off colour.

If you are unaffected stomachwise it can be quite fun. The side to side means you all drunkenly stagger down the corridors attempting to be out of phase with those oncoming.

The pitching up and down can be a boon on the stairs if you take a few steps as it is pitching down it makes them feel almost flat. Time it wrong and you weigh a lot more though.
Also this isn't a good sign.


Still most of the people on board are very seasoned travellers so either are unaffected, load up with seasickness pills or hiding in their cabins. Dinner seemed to be as full as usual.

It's colder here as we dock. I put every layer on which works out to be toasty warm despite -8. I'm escorting another tour. WW2 stuff. The cathedral and a museum which due to escorting a mobility issue guest I got there a little late and didn't take any pictures. Then to a barracks with views over the city. The to a U-boat pen. Now to hit the captains cocktail party.

Journey's start

What's it all about? I got offered the chance by go stargazing to be the resident astronomer on board the Fred Olsen Christmas cruise in search of the northern lights. I get a free cruise, provided I give a few lectures and stand in the cold and dark showing the passengers the night skies.  I will be sailing on the Balmoral , which can host 1325 guests, and 551 crew.  We will sail from Southampton across the North Sea to Norway, and then continue up to the very North of Norway beyond the arctic circle. I leave on the 22nd December!
