All aboard

I'm on the ship. I have my cabin and have had a snack. All looking good.

I have a meeting soon with the entertainment team to sort out what happens when. Meanwhile I'm undercover, although I've met the "furious fiddler" another of the entertainments staff.


Christmas looks to be in full swing!

Slightly odd layout of my cabin, but hey - at least I can see outside!



Not too many venturing outside on deck despite the weak winter sun.


I found a buffet so everything is good now!

It's colder here as we dock. I put every layer on which works out to be toasty warm despite -8. I'm escorting another tour. WW2 stuff. The cathedral and a museum which due to escorting a mobility issue guest I got there a little late and didn't take any pictures. Then to a barracks with views over the city. The to a U-boat pen. Now to hit the captains cocktail party.

Journey's start

What's it all about? I got offered the chance by go stargazing to be the resident astronomer on board the Fred Olsen Christmas cruise in search of the northern lights. I get a free cruise, provided I give a few lectures and stand in the cold and dark showing the passengers the night skies.  I will be sailing on the Balmoral , which can host 1325 guests, and 551 crew.  We will sail from Southampton across the North Sea to Norway, and then continue up to the very North of Norway beyond the arctic circle. I leave on the 22nd December!
